When a hero walks up to a neutral stack, the stack decides on the spot whether it attacks, offers to join for free or for gold, or flees; the game shows only the result, on contact.

The stack compares the hero's army strength with its own, counts the creatures of its kind in the army, adds Diplomacy, and weighs it all against an aggression it drew when the map was loaded. Each row below is one aggression the stack can hold.
